Introduction to Mediation (2 or 3 day course)

This course is an introduction to how to mediate for those in dispute. Learn the principles and different stages of mediation, and gain an understanding of the skills used in effective mediation through role play, feedback and lots of opportunity for discussion and questions.

Additionally, participants can attend Day 3, which provides an introduction to the process of conducting initial and joint mediation meetings. Please note: Day 3 takes place on the Wednesday.

Days 1 & 2

  • The core principles underpinning good mediation practice

  • Effectively listening, reflecting back and asking questions so that those in conflict can create their own ways through the difficulty

  • Working with prejudices and stereotypes

  • Dealing with difficult situations

Day 3

An introduction to:

  • How to conduct initial meetings

  • How to facilitate joint meetings

  • Confidence in using the three core skills involved in mediation:

  • Active listening

  • Providing summaries to aid reflection

  • Asking effective, non-leading open questions to encourage exploration of the issue and creation of solutions.

  • Confidence in applying mediation skills to everyday situations.

  • Day 3: An understanding of how the structure and process of mediation enables you to work constructively with people in conflict situations.
